Custom ERP vs Odoo: An Honest Comparison for SMBs
A genuine comparison of custom ERP and Odoo for small and medium manufacturers and trading companies — no marketing spin.
Custom ERP vs Odoo: An Honest Comparison for SMBs
Odoo is one of the most popular ERP options for Indian SMBs. It has a wide module ecosystem, an active community, and a growing India partner network. We evaluate it honestly here — including where it wins over custom ERP.
Where Odoo Wins
- Speed of initial setup: a basic Odoo instance can be running in days, not weeks
- Module breadth: 30+ business modules available out of the box
- Community resources: extensive documentation, training videos, and forum support
- Standard workflows: if your process matches Odoo's default workflow, configuration is fast
- Self-hosted option: you can run Odoo on your own server and avoid cloud dependency
Where Custom ERP Wins
- No per-user licensing: Odoo charges per user per month. At 20–50 users, this compounds significantly.
- Exact workflow fit: your production process, approval chain, or reporting structure may not match Odoo's module architecture
- No implementation consultant dependency: Odoo customization requires Odoo-certified developers. Custom ERP just requires your vendor.
- Code ownership: with custom ERP you own the full source code. With Odoo, the platform belongs to Odoo SA.
- No unused module overhead: Odoo installs come with dozens of modules — your system only has what you need.
The Real Question to Ask
Does your business process fit Odoo's standard module architecture — or does it require significant customization?
If your answer is "we have a lot of unique steps," the customization cost of making Odoo fit your workflow often exceeds the cost of building custom. Odoo customization is expensive because it requires Odoo-framework expertise, not general development skills.
If your workflows are standard — basic inventory, sales, invoicing — Odoo may be the faster and cheaper path. We recommend being honest about this in your evaluation.
Real Cost Comparison
- Odoo Community (self-hosted): Free software, but implementation + customization by a partner typically costs ₹5L–₹20L
- Odoo Enterprise (30 users): ₹1,800/user/month = ₹6.48L/year = ₹32L over 5 years
- Custom ERP (similar scope): ₹14L–₹22L one-time. You own it permanently.
The 5-year total cost often favors custom ERP — especially once you factor in that the per-user cost grows as you hire.
Our Recommendation
If you have 5–15 employees and standard workflows: start with Odoo Community. If you have 20+ employees, custom workflows, or multi-location operations that don't fit Odoo's standard modules: build custom.
